Ears - Mastoidectomy

A mastoidectomy is a procedure to remove an infected portion of the bone behind the ear. A simple mastectomy is performed through the ear or through an incision behind the ear. The mastoid bone is opened and the infected cells removed. In a radical mastoidectomy, the eardrum and most of the middle ear structure is removed.  In a modified radical mastoidectomy, the eardrum and middle ear are not removed preserving a higher level of hearing.
